Start and end an emergency or drill

You can start an emergency to notify employees and visitors about an active emergency, or run a drill to help them practice what to do during an emergency. When the emergency or drill is complete, you can end it.

Who can use this feature?

  • Users with the Account Administrator, Site Administrator, or Safety Officer role or with permission to manage Active Evacuations
  • Available on all tiers

Start an emergency or drill

You can start an emergency or drill from the EmergencyOS platform, the EmergencyOS app, or your onsite iPad.

EmergencyOS platform

  1. From the left sidebar in EmergencyOS, click Dashboard.
  2. In the top-right corner, take one of the following actions:
    • To start an active emergency, click Start Emergency.

  3. From the Site drop-down menu, select the site where the emergency or drill is occurring.
  4. From the Select Profile drop-down menu, select the emergency profile that matches the emergency or drill.
  5. The emergency profile includes participants who can receive notifications. To notify them, make sure Send Notifications is turned on.
  6. (Optional) To include extra details about the emergency or drill, enter a message in Add Start Message Email
  7. Take one of the following actions:
    • For an emergency, click Start Emergency.
    • For a drill, click Run Drill.

EmergencyOS app

To use the EmergencyOS app, you must be on the Corporate tier.

  1. Open the EmergencyOS app, then take one of the following actions:
    • To start an active emergency, tap Start Emergency.

  2. From the Site drop-down menu, select the site where the emergency or drill is occurring.
  3. From the Select Profile drop-down menu, select the emergency profile that matches the emergency or drill.
  4. The emergency profile includes participants who can receive notifications. To notify them, make sure Send Notifications is turned on.
  5. (Optional) To include extra details about the emergency or drill, add a message in Add Start Message Email.
  6. Take one of the following actions:
    • For an emergency, tap Start Emergency.
    • For a drill, tap Run Drill.

Onsite iPad

Make sure the option to start emergency events from your onsite iPad is turned on. For more information, see Allow emergency triggers from your iPad.

  1. On the iPad, tap and hold the VisitorOS text in the bottom-left or bottom-right corner of the Welcome screen.

  2. Enter the emergency PIN code. 
  3. If you want to practice your emergency procedures, tap Drill.
  4. From the Emergency Profile drop-down menu, select the emergency profile that matches the emergency or drill.
  5. (Optional) To include extra details about the emergency or drill, add a message in Add Start Message Email.
  6. Tap Start.

After starting an emergency or drill

After you start an emergency or drill, the Dashboard displays the response type. Depending on the response type, you may need to complete additional procedures. The response types are:

  • Roll Call: Requires participants to evacuate to a designated safe location where Safety Officers account for them and confirm they have evacuated safely.
  • Building Sweeps: Requires Safety Officers to sweep and clear designated zones in the building to confirm that all participants have exited safely.
  • Alert Only: Notifies participants about the emergency or drill. No additional response procedures are required.

End an emergency or drill

Once the emergency or drill is complete, you can end it through the EmergencyOS platform, the EmergencyOS app, or your onsite iPad.

EmergencyOS platform

  1. From the left sidebar in EmergencyOS, click Dashboard.
  2. In the Active Incidents panel, next to the emergency or drill you want to end, click the Finish Emergency flag_icon.png icon.
  3. In the confirmation modal, click Confirm.

EmergencyOS app

  1. Open the EmergencyOS app, tap the arrow icon at the bottom of the screen, then tap End Active Incident.

  2. On the confirmation modal, tap Confirm.

Onsite iPad

  1. On the iPad, tap Finish Evacuation.
  2. Enter the 4-digit PIN.
  3. On the confirmation modal, tap Confirm.
