About ID scanning and validation

ID scanning and ID Validation work together as part of the same visitor sign-in process. ID scanning captures information from a visitor's ID. When ID Validation is enabled, the same scan is also analyzed for potential security concerns. The results can then be used with watchlists to identify visitors who are allowed or denied entry to your site.

Important:

ID Validation requires version 26.4.1 or later of the VisitorOS Kiosk app on your iPad. To learn how to update the app, see Update the VisitorOS app on your iPad.

Note:

Digital IDs are not currently supported. Visitors must scan a physical ID to use ID scanning and validation.

How ID scanning and validation work

  1. During sign-in, a visitor whose visitor type requires ID scanning is prompted to scan their physical ID using the onsite iPad.
  2. Information captured from the ID is automatically entered into the corresponding sign-in fields. If configured, a photo of the ID is also saved with the visitor's record.
  3. If ID Validation is enabled, the scanned document is analyzed for potential security concerns. Depending on the results, the scan can return one or more of the following findings:
    • Authenticity Concern: The document is checked for physical security markers that help verify its authenticity. For information about the checks that may be performed, see Identity document authenticity checks - Image Patterns and Liveness.
    • Information mismatch: The information on the ID does not match when checked against other information on the document.
    • Expired ID: The expiry date printed on the ID has passed.
    • Possible copy of ID: The ID may be a copy, printout, or image displayed on a screen instead of the original physical document.
    • Valid ID: No concerns were identified with the ID.
  4. The validation result is compared against your watchlist to determine whether the visitor is allowed or denied entry.

    Note:

If you have the Visitor Approval add-on, you can change the approval or denial of a visitor.
